This Act prevents sales of food unfit for consumption. Food must be accurately labelled with its ingredients. Remember, your local council's environmental health officers can close down a shop or restaurant which sells unfit food products.
The Act includes food hygiene laws on how food products should be prepared in restaurants and pubs.
Goods and services must not be advertised inaccurately. It's also illegal to sell something 'on sale' or at a 'reduced price' unless it really was sold at a higher price for 28 days before the price cut.
This Act also allows trading standards officials to enter business premises and remove any products which are not what they appear.
Under these rules, you must make sure all new goods sold are of what's called 'merchantable quality' - basically, without defects. They must do the job they're supposed to do - if you're selling a fax machine and the paper feeder swallows up all the paper in one go, you're in trouble. And, thirdly, what's said on the product's packaging - details like size and weights - must be accurate.
Otherwise your customer can demand a refund - and it won't be doing your image much good.
